Suspect who shot a police officer in California is in the country illegally

A man suspected of having shot a police officer when he was stopped in Newman, California, is in the country illegally, said Stanislaus County Sheriff.

33-year-old policeman Ronil Singh stopped the suspect shortly before 1 at 1 am on Wednesday night, and a few minutes later shouted "about a shot" on the radio.

“Multiple agencies responded to the call to assist and found Singh at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds,” said a news release from the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, which is leading the investigation.

The wounded policeman was taken to the hospital, where they noted his death, police said.

The sheriff's department identified the suspect, but did not disclose his name.

“It is inappropriate for me to identify (the suspect) until we are 100 percent sure we have the correct information,” Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said.

He said that Singh was stopping on the road for the suspect DUI investigation during the shooting.

“There was a shootout,” he said. “Singh was trying to defend himself.”

Police said the suspect, identified in surveillance images as a large man with dark, close-cropped hair, was in a silver or gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck. The pickup was discovered later Wednesday when detectives served a search warrant at an address near Newman. the sheriff's department said.

In the photographs provided by the police, the suspect is wearing a zipper hoodie with the Ecko logo on the sleeve, and a thick silver chain around his neck.

President Donald Trump tweeted the incident on Thursday afternoon, stating that “the time has come to take care of border security.”

Singh, a native of Fiji, has worked at the Newman Police Department with 12 members since July 2011.

“He was an American patriot,” Richardson said. “He was not born in this country, but he came here for one purpose - to serve this country.”
