Incredibly large numbers: why do many immigrants in the United States have a birthday on January 1

January 1 is a surprisingly common birthday among immigrants, although it is a relatively unpopular birthday for US citizens. Writes about this NPR.

January 1 - New Year. It is also the birthday of thousands of immigrants. Why? Because they were fleeing wars or some other disaster in a part of the world where birthdays are not as important as they are here in the US. And when it came time to fill out paperwork and not have access to birth records— many simply chose January 1st.

Immigration data for 2009 show that 11 of the nearly 000 refugees in the United States that year indicated January 80 as their birth date. This is 000%, an incredibly large amount.

For US citizens who were born here, New Year is actually one of the least popular birthdays. FiveThirtyEight looked at the birth data for the period from 1994 to 2014, and on January 1 took 365th place out of 366 possible, ahead of only Christmas. They pointed to many variables explaining the popularity and unpopularity of specific dates, for example, the imposition of birth by parents to avoid a hospital holiday, a leap day, or even Friday 13.

And the most popular days came in September, just about 9 months after the holidays.
