Why the appearance of an Amazon office could hurt New York

After the decision of Amazon to open its headquarters in New York, inscriptions began to appear in the city expressing protest.

The inscriptions “AmazoNo” appeared on the sidewalks and parking lots for bicycles with spray paint, followed by the hashtag #NoAmazonInLIC.

Amazon is currently engaged in a deal with the city, state and private landowners Plaxall to build a campus of up to 8 million square feet on the East River.

The project will cost Amazon up to $ 3,6 billion, but the company will pay most of this cost thanks to $ 2,8 billion in city and state tax subsidies.

Massive privileges for the company have displeased local politicians and activist groups who claim that a company with a trillion budget does not need privileges or concessions to move to New York.

Others argue that the influx of workers and potential new residents in Queens "will strengthen the already crowded sewer pipes and turn train number 7 into a jar of sardines."

But while the locals fear that Amazon will destroy their neighborhood, they are not too worried about anti-Amazon vandalism.

"Compared to the damage that Amazon will do to our neighborhood - raising rents and everything else, a little graffiti on the sidewalk is nothing," said 42-year-old Chris Borodin.

"Amazon doesn't come here to hire people in the neighborhood - people who already have jobs with Amazon come here," said Raymond Normandeau, 74, a nearby Queensbridge resident. “I support a small protest that objects to this.”

Still others noted that a few drops of paint will not stop the Internet giant from coming to New York.

Recall that many cities rushed go out of their way to offer their opportunities and tax breaks to become a second home for Amazon, its substantial expenses and jobs.

The company chose the Long Island City area of ​​Queens, New York, and the Washington suburban area of ​​Arlington, Virginia.

From the words of Amazon, each city will receive $ 2.5 billion in investment in the economy and 25 000 new jobs.
