A petition in support of Sentsov on the White House website collected 100 thousands of signatures: what's next

9 August appeared on the White House website petition with a request to the presidential administration of the United States to assist in the release of the Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov illegally detained in a Russian prison.

As of 6, the document collected 100 thousands of required signatures in September, which means that the White House is obliged to send it to the relevant department and give a formal response with a decision on it.

At the time of writing, more than 105,5 thousands of people signed the petition.

According to the rules of the petition service, the administration of the US President must, within 60 days from the end of the collection of signatures (in the case of the Sentsov petition, this is September 8), notify all of the signatories of the document’s request. Thus, before November 7, all signatories of the petition will receive the decision of the US administration regarding their request to assist in the release of the Ukrainian director to the e-mail address indicated during the registration.

In early September famous Ukrainians launched a campaign in social networks with a call to sign a petition.

Recall Oleg Sentsov Started the 14 hunger strike on May 2018. He demands the release of all Ukrainian political prisoners held by Russia. Thus, on 6 September, he is already starving 116 days.

The Ukrainian was detained by Russian security forces in the Crimea 11 May 2014. He was accused of allegedly preparing terrorist attacks on the peninsula during the occupation of Russia. Later, Sentsov was accused of possessing weapons and explosives.

5 August 2015, the North Caucasian District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Sentsov to 20 years of strict regime.
