Walking faster: the speed of moving cars through the streets of New York is getting lower

The average speed of travel by car in New York in the past few years has been constantly decreasing due to the increase in the number of vehicles, which leads to traffic jam and traffic jams.

According to a report from the New York City Transportation Department, the average speed south of 60 Street decreased from 9,1 miles (14,6 km) per hour in 2010 to 7,1 miles (11,4 km) per hour in 2017, in Midtown, these figures are even lower from 6,4 miles (10,3 km) per hour to 5 miles (8 km) per hour for the same period, writes The New York Post.

Services also played a role in this slowdown. Uber and Lyft, who flooded New York with hundreds of their cars.

"It's gotten to the point where it takes me two or three hours longer to make the same number of deliveries as I did a few years ago," said truck driver Angel Rodriguez, who lives in the Bronx and delivers to stores in Manhattan.

“You know what’s really bad is when you’re standing in traffic and the old ladies on the sidewalk are moving faster than you,” the driver noted.

There are currently more than 110 vehicles registered with the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission—nearly triple the city's 000 total.

For the year, New York taxi drivers make 92,5 million trips (according to 2016 of the year).

The increase in the number of taxis caused by the growth of their popularity with the advent of applications Uber and LyftMany New Yorkers are unhappy with the service and conditions in the city’s metro and buses, and often choose a private car or taxi to go to work, which increases the number of vehicles on the streets.

Only 23% of New Yorkers use the subway as their primary mode of transportation, 8% use buses, while 32% use cars, 3% use taxis and 28% prefer to walk.

The number of trips on the New York subway in 2015 and 2016 decreased for the first time in many years, despite the fact that the population, employment and tourism in the city are increasing.

Bus usage has also fallen, from 697 million passengers in 2010 to 638 million in 2016. Not the least of the reasons for this reduction was the reduction in bus speeds from 7,64 miles (12,3 km) per hour to 7,44 miles (11,9 km) per hour over the same period.

Travel speeds in Manhattan fell even further, by 21% from 2010 to 2017.

Meanwhile, the registration of private cars in the city is ahead of population growth, reaching 1,9 million transport units in 2016 (by 8,3% more than in 2010).

Studies have also found positive changes in the New York transport system. It turned out that the launch of the subway on Second Avenue in 2017 had reduced the number of people who use taxis and their own cars to travel to work.

As a result, traffic speeds on neighboring streets increased, in particular on Third Avenue, the average travel speed increased from 9,2 miles (14,8 km) per hour in 2017 to 10,2 miles (16,4 km) per hour this year.

In addition, more and more people travel around the city on bicycles, the number of such trips has grown from 250 000 per day in 2010 to 460 000 per day in 2016.
