The pedestrian is always right: there are very strange traffic rules in two US states

From childhood, in post-Soviet countries, they teach that you need to cross the street only in a designated place. However, despite the fact that the first traffic rules for pedestrians were established in the United States, now completely different rules apply here. A city convenient for everyone

“Two months ago, my husband and I visited Virginia. I was fascinated by this state and didn’t even want to leave. One of the reasons for this attitude was an incident on a busy Richmond street, the author writes. — While walking, I saw a middle-aged man suddenly step out onto the roadway. The cars quickly slowed down and waited patiently for the pedestrian to cross the street.”

Later she asked her husband what the fine is for such behavior. Surely what happened was recorded by cameras, and the identity of a citizen who does not respect the rules will soon be established.

However, it turned out that the pedestrian was acting in accordance with local laws. The fact is that the states of Virginia and Texas have already allowed residents to cross the road at any convenient place.

There is still a small caveat: the permission works if the nearest designated transition is too far away. This is in Virginia, and in Texas you can easily walk across the street, even almost next to a zebra.

For over a century, large cities have been much more convenient for drivers. Anyone who travels on foot is forced to use the crossing and, thus, is limited in his rights.

“Of course, with a constant flow of cars, pedestrians jumping onto the road can create an emergency situation. But now many look at this problem differently. If drivers are prepared for the fact that someone wants to cross, they will always have time to slow down, the author writes. “In addition, we must take into account that the movement in the States is noticeably different from our realities. When I arrived, I immediately noticed that cars were moving much slower around the city.”

Situation in European countries

Having learned about such laws in the United States, the author decided to look for similar ones in European countries and, as it turned out, the same rules apply in Germany.

If the street is not fenced off, it is allowed to freely cross it in any convenient place. Of course, given the situation on the road at the moment.

“I instantly had the idea to allow the same thing in Russia. When I told my husband about everything, he explained that for this we need to reduce the maximum speed on our roads. In addition, a lot depends on the general culture of behavior. If the driver and pedestrian are mutually polite, there will be significantly fewer conflicts and accidents,” the blogger noted.
