Passenger air transportation in Russia was recognized as unsafe: only Bhutan has such a low assessment of the reliability of aircraft

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which verifies flight safety in 187 countries around the world, marked Russia with a red flag. He writes about it Meduza.

The organization also scored 77,4% efficiency in the implementation of standards in the airworthiness category in Russia. Previously, this figure was higher.

Back in June, it was reported that the ICAO was pointing out safety issues in Russia due to the double registration of aircraft. The organization gave until September 14 to eliminate the violation.

Due to the fact that this did not happen, ICAO raised "substantial safety concerns" for flights in Russia and made them publicly available.

The country of registration is very important, because it is used to establish radio frequencies for the operation of aircraft equipment.

The Federal Air Transport Agency explained the double registration of aircraft by the actions of "unfriendly states" and said that the ICAO conclusions about the unsafety of Russian airlines' aircraft are not true.

Now, after receiving a red flag from ICAO, Russia has become one of the countries where problems with ensuring flight safety have been officially declared. In addition to the Russian Federation, only Bhutan currently has a red flag.

Based on the conclusions of ICAO, other countries may prohibit the aircraft of Russian airlines from using their airspace, since, according to ICAO standards, the authorities of this country are responsible for a disaster that occurred in the airspace of a particular country.

But most countries are already preventing Russian aircraft from entering their airspace due to sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Most foreign aircraft of Russian airlines are registered in Bermuda. In March, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Bermuda authorities suspended the airworthiness certificates of Russian aircraft. To preserve the fleet, the Russian authorities transferred more than 500 aircraft to Russian jurisdiction.
