In Oregon, too, can begin to issue a driver's license to illegals

Illegal immigrants in Oregon have become one step closer to the right to get a driver's license.

18 June The State House of Representatives supported the relevant 39 bill with votes against 21. The document provides for the expansion of driving rights for all Oregon residents, regardless of their immigration status, writes KTVZ.

The bill was a priority for pro-immigration groups who claim that illegal immigrants often live in rural areas of the state where they need a car to move. Illegals who drive a car without a license are afraid that the usual stop by patrolmen on the road may end up in deportation for them.

At the same time, opponents insist that the measure should be sent for approval by all residents of the state, especially given that the voters in the region have already rejected such a proposal in 2016.

House Bill 2015 extends the right to obtain a driver's license for all residents of the state of Oregon, regardless of immigration status, returning legislation in this area to the norms that preceded 2008, when the possibility of obtaining illegal immigrants was canceled. At the same time, the state of Oregon intends to apply stricter federal standards for issuing driver's licenses to comply with the Federal Identity Card Act Real ID Act.

“This is legislation to keep our roads safe so our residents can complete the daily tasks that are important to their lives,” said State Rep. Diego Hernandez (D-Portland).

In accordance with the bill, the state will offer two different types of driver's licenses: a new, extended license corresponding to the Real ID Act, which can be used for air travel and for access to federal buildings; and a standard license, which will only give the right to drive a car and will not be accepted as an identity card for flights or attempts to visit federal buildings. To obtain an extended license, Oregonians must provide additional identification documents and proof of citizenship. The standard license will be available to all Oregon residents who pass the written and driving tests, pay the required fees, and provide proof of identity and proof of residency in the state, regardless of immigration status.

Rep. David Gomberg (Otis Democrat), in his speech, spoke about the problems that many Oregonians face, including himself. According to him, even legal residents of the region and citizens of the United States who were born outside the country often do not have the necessary supporting documents that are necessary to obtain an identity card that meets the requirements of Real ID Act.

After approval by the House of Representatives, the bill is submitted to the State Senate. If it is approved there, the signature of the governor is still required for its entry into force.
