Relations between US and China are heating up: this time because of Ukraine

The Chinese holding Beijing Skyrizon Aviation plans to buy a controlling stake in the Ukrainian company Motor Sich. The US said the deal is just a way to make Ukraine debt-dependent to China.

The Motor Sich company is one of the world's largest manufacturers of engines for aircraft and industrial gas turbine units.

The Chinese holding will buy a controlling stake in the Ukrainian enterprise - more than 50% of the shares, 25% of the shares will go to Ukraine.

The Chinese companies Skyrizon Aircraft and Xinwei Technology Group, if they receive permission from the Antimonopoly Committee to purchase over 50% of the shares of Motor Sich, will provide grant funding in the amount of $100 million to the Ukrainian aircraft industry.

US National Security Advisor John Bolton during a visit to Kiev, said he was concerned about a possible deal between Ukraine and China.

He noted that Ukraine must make the decision to sell part of Motor Sich to China independently, but the United States warns its allies about the possible dangers of agreements with the Chinese side, he writes. "Ukrainian Truth".

“I will not touch on specific agreements and transactions, since the final decision on this agreement is the sovereign right of Ukraine. We have generally outlined our cautions and concerns about the unfair and dishonest practices being carried out by the Chinese side, particularly in the United States. We express this concern to all our friends and allies,” Bolton said.

He also added that the US is worried about the practice of creating debt, which is used by the Chinese side.

According to Bolton, although China allegedly offers fairly attractive financial conditions, subsequently countries that agree to this end up in debt dependence.

Chinese Ambassador to Ukraine Du Wei perceived Bolton’s words as an attempt to put pressure on Ukraine, and also called his words that China is using “debt diplomacy” unfair, writes Interfax-Ukraine.

“We are confident that with the promotion of One Belt, One Road, China and Ukraine will have even more cooperation projects in the future,” he noted.

“If Ukraine succumbs to debt pressure, it is not from the Chinese. If Ukraine is threatened by a debt hole, then the so-called hole was not dug by the Chinese,” Du Wei emphasized.

Bolton cited the theft of military technology as another cause for concern. As an example, he cited Chinese fifth-generation aircraft, which are “very similar to the American F35 aircraft.”

To which, Du Wei replied that during his visit, Bolton was too keen on Sino-Ukrainian cooperation in the field of military technology.

“I would like to say that military technology cooperation is of course an important part of business cooperation between China and Ukraine, which is also based on the principles of mutual benefit and win-win,” Du Wei said.

Du Wei also said that the Chinese government has nothing to do with the deal and does not interfere with the commercial relationship between Motor Sich and the Chinese company Beijing Skyrizon Aviation, adding that the United States should not interfere in Ukraine’s internal and external affairs. as well as requiring Kiev to choose between them and China. “China has never spoken out regarding Ukraine’s domestic and foreign policy, and has never demanded that Ukraine choose between China and the United States. And the United States should not blatantly interfere in the internal and external affairs of Ukraine, just as it should not demand Ukraine to choose between China and the United States,” the ambassador said.

“This is a commercial activity between private companies,” he emphasized.

According to him, the position of the Chinese government is based on three theses: first, the transaction must take place on market conditions; second, Chinese companies that conduct foreign economic activity must respect the laws of the country in which they operate; third, the rights of these companies must be properly protected.

“This is a normal business transaction. We do not participate or interfere,” Du Wei added.

When asked whether Ukrainian technologies could be transferred to Russia after the deal is concluded, he replied: “All this is speculation, we comply with the rules for protecting intellectual property.”

Motor Sich Public Relations Director Anatoly Malysh said that Chinese companies have already bought shares in the plant and now “the decision is up to the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMCU).”
