The US and Mexico reached an agreement on immigration: what awaits illegal immigrants

US President Donald Trump rejected a plan to impose tariffs on all Mexican imports in return for Mexico’s efforts to curb the flow of migrants entering America from that country.

7 Jun. Trump said in his Twitter that the United States and Mexico reached a bilateral agreement to reduce the number of migrants entering the US across the southwest border, writes New York Times.

New import tariffs from Mexico should have come into effect on Monday, June 10. Trump's statement came after several days of tense negotiations between the two countries in Washington.

"Tariffs that the US planned introduce on Monday vs mexico, are thereby suspended indefinitely,” Trump tweeted around 20:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7. “Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take decisive action to stop migration through their country and to our southern border.”

Here is a joint statement by the United States and Mexico, released by the State Department on the evening of June 7:

“The United States and Mexico met this week to address the general problems of illegal migration, including the entry of migrants into the United States in violation of US law. Given the sharp increase in the number of migrants moving from Central America through Mexico to the United States, both countries recognize the vital importance of a quick response to an emergency humanitarian and security situation. The governments of the United States and Mexico will work together to immediately implement a durable solution. ”

National Guard on the border

“Mexico will take unprecedented steps to strengthen law enforcement agencies to curb illegal migration, including the deployment of the National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to the southern border. Mexico is also taking decisive measures to eliminate organizations involved in smuggling and trafficking in human beings, as well as illegal financial and transport networks. In addition, the United States and Mexico pledge to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including the exchange of information and coordinated actions to better protect and protect our common border. ”

Migrant Protection Protocols

“The United States will immediately expand the use of existing protocols to protect migrants across its entire southern border. This means that people crossing the southern border of the United States seeking asylum will be quickly returned to Mexico, where they can wait for their applications to be considered. ”

“In response, Mexico will allow the entry of all of these people on humanitarian grounds in accordance with their international obligations as long as they await the consideration of asylum applications. “Both sides also agree that if the measures taken do not bring the expected results, further actions will be taken. Therefore, the United States and Mexico will continue to discuss the terms of additional agreements to address the problems of irregular migrant flows and asylum issues, which must be completed and announced within 90 days, if necessary. ”

"The United States and Mexico will become leaders in working with regional and international partners to create a more prosperous and secure Central America to address the underlying causes of migration so that citizens of the region can build a better life for themselves and their families at home."
