Obama abolishes registration system and tracking of all immigrants
The Obama administration has abolished the registration and tracking system for all immigrants from “high-risk areas” called the NSEERS (National Entry and Departure Registration System). Thus, Obama was probably trying to send a serious message to the future president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The registry system was established after the September 11 terrorist attacks of September 2001, but was not in operation since 2011. Obama’s White House strongly opposed discrimination of any kind against Muslim immigrants.
President-elect Donald Trump proposed not only to resume the registration program upon entry and exit, but also to expand it to all Muslims, as well as foreigners with non-immigrant visas.
On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security published a decree that would completely get rid of the NSEERS system, thereby forcing the administration of the new president to create something new.
“The Department of Homeland Security stopped using NSEERS more than 5 years ago after the program was found to be ineffective and did not improve security,” department spokesman Neema Hakim said. He also added that the program diverts personnel and resources from other areas that are more efficient.
The decree takes effect on Friday, December 23, long before Trump is promoted. Therefore, when his administration starts work, it will be necessary to look for another method of registration upon entering and leaving the United States.
