'I will miss': outgoing US ambassador to Russia told what he thinks of the country

Outgoing US Ambassador to Russia John Huntsman said he would miss the Russian Federation and gave advice to his successor.

Huntsman previously submitted his resignation to US President Donald Trump, the diplomat intends to leave his post on 3 in October. A copy of the letter of resignation is available RIA News. In Moscow, commenting on the resignation of the US ambassador, they called him a professional, but noted that in the current conditions he could not realize the potential of bilateral relations.

“I will miss a lot of what I experienced here: the warmth and hospitality of the Russian people, their loyalty. True friends appear, and this is not forgotten. Amazing talent, which finds expression in the objects that I saw in the Suzdal church, or in music that brings tears to my eyes, are phenomena of a special order. You don't see this in other parts of the world. And I will never forget these moments. And I had a lot of such moments, and it’s wonderful,” Huntsman said in an interview with KP.ru.

He noted that Russia is “a huge, beautiful and such a different country.” According to Huntsman, Russia is rich in resources, but the country's most valuable resource is "the 150 million wonderful people who gave so much to the world in literature and music, despite the tragedies they experienced and the 70 million killed over the past century."

Huntsman emphasized that it was a great honor for him to work as the US ambassador to the Russian Federation, because this position has always been considered one of the most important diplomatic appointments in the United States foreign service.

“So I am confident that the president will make a good choice, and I think we will find out about it soon. I would advise the next ambassador not to waste a minute and give this work his all. Over the past two years, my wife Mary Kay and I have given absolutely everything to our work, we haven’t wasted a minute, we haven’t missed a single opportunity, and now, looking back, I don’t regret anything,” added the US Ambassador.

He noted that the main thing in the US post in the Russian Federation is to devote every effort to work and ensure that due attention is paid to areas in which the interests of the two countries coincide.

“Sometimes they are not easy to find, but our countries have a lot of them. They need to be identified and worked on in depth. And all this will ultimately lead to increased trust. There is one word that is truly important in our relationships - trust. Nothing will happen without him. If there is trust, everything will happen. And wherever the new ambassador goes, no matter what negotiations he conducts, this should remain at the forefront of his mind,” the diplomat added.

As the New York Times reported earlier, citing a senior representative of the US presidential administration, Trump intends to nominate the first US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan to the post of ambassador to Russia. Sullivan’s candidacy must be approved by the Senate, which had previously approved him as deputy secretary of state.
