US student accused of assaulting police in Moscow: family considers falsification
A student from the USA, Trevor Reed, is accused of assaulting a policeman in Moscow, committed at risk to the life of a law enforcement officer. This follows from the materials of the criminal case against the American, which are available TASS.
“A criminal case has been initiated against Reed, [a student] at the University of North Texas, on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 318 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Use of violence against a representative of authority that is dangerous to his life or health”). He was chosen as a preventive measure in the form of detention,” the documents say.
In addition, the materials indicate that Reid previously lived near the Leningradskoye Highway in Moscow in his girlfriend’s apartment. The attack occurred in August 2019, at the same time he was detained. The court has repeatedly extended him a preventive measure in the form of detention. In early February, once again, the term was extended by two months.
As the newspaper reported The New York Times with reference to the student’s father, Reed, 28, had previously served in the United States Marine Corps. Relatives of the detainee consider the allegations false and ask the US administration to pay attention to this case, the publication says.
"He is an American citizen who was incarcerated for something we don't believe he did," Reed's father said in an interview outside the courtroom. “Because we believe the allegations are false, we would like the US government to take a closer look at the case.”
Reed’s family has not appeared in the media since his arrest more than six months ago, fearing that high-profile statements could turn Russian authorities against Reed. But they claim that his detention in the Moscow pre-trial detention center, pending trial, is disproportionate to the charges.

At a hearing on February 25, the court rejected Reed’s father’s offer of a $ 15 bail and a guarantee that the former marine would remain in Russia throughout the trial. If convicted, he faces up to 300 years in prison. The next hearing is scheduled for March 10th.
In May 2019, Reid went to Moscow to learn Russian and spend time with his Russian girlfriend, whom he met during his vacation in Greece and whom the court called Alina Tsibulnik.
On August 15, he attended a party for his girlfriend's colleagues, at which he was offered to drink a large amount of vodka, according to a family statement. According to Reed, he does not remember anything further.
“There is also the possibility that he may have been given other substances without his knowledge,” the statement said.
After the party ended, Reid was in a state of excitement, so a friend and her colleagues called the police so that he would not suffer, the statement said.
According to his family, the police took Reid to the police station and instructed his girlfriend to return after two hours. According to her, when she returned, she found that Reed was being interrogated by officers of the Federal Security Service of Russia, or the FSB, the country's most influential security agency.
The statement said the interrogation was conducted "without a lawyer or adequate interpreter while he was under the influence."
Subsequently, Reed was charged with assault for grabbing the hand of a policeman who was driving him to the police station, causing the car to turn off the road. He was also accused of having hit another police officer who was sitting in the back seat. This officer received minor injuries.
