List of names and forecast for hurricane season 2020 unveiled
The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season will officially begin on June 1, and below are the names of the season, which reaches a maximum of September 10 and ends on November 30, writes Space coast daily.
Hurricane activity forecasts are published before each hurricane season by renowned hurricane experts such as Philip J. Klotsbach and colleagues at the University of Colorado; and separately by NOAA forecasters.
The pre-season forecasts published December 19, 2019 by the Tropical Storm Risk public consortium of insurance, risk management and seasonal climate forecasting experts at University College London have published an extended forecast, according to which this hurricane season is slightly above average.
In its report, the organization named 15 named storms, seven hurricanes, four major hurricanes. This forecast was based on the prediction of trade winds close to average and slightly higher than normal sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic, as well as the neutral phase of the El Niño-South oscillations in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean.
System name
According to the National Hurricane Center (NOAA), names are given only to tropical storms that maintain wind speeds above 39 mph (62,7 km / h) and will become a storm when it reaches a hurricane with a maximum sustained wind of 74 mph (119 km / hour) or higher.
Until the 1950s, meteorologists tracked hurricanes and tropical storms by year and the order of storms for that year.
In the 1950s, meteorologists realized that it was difficult to track unnamed storms, especially if more than one storm occurred at any given time. By 1953, meteorologists in the United States used the names of tropical storms and cyclones.
The World Meteorological Organization is responsible for the name of the storms.
Names alternate between male and female names listed alphabetically and in chronological order, starting with A and skipping Q and U, X, Y and Z. If more than 21 names are required during the season, the Greek alphabet is used.
