Illegal immigrants without a criminal record - a target for migration officers
Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kelly said that DHS will not arrest and deport illegal immigrants simply because they have no documents. Kelly argued that the ministry was focusing its efforts on finding and deportation of illegal immigrants with a criminal record. But, despite these requirements, the new data shows the opposite, writes Immigration impact.
In several public speeches, Kelly has repeatedly stated that immigration and customs officers (ICE) are looking for undocumented immigrants who are "criminals" with "many convictions."
The reality, however, is very different. Despite the rhetoric of Kelly, the administration made a priority on almost all undocumented migrants. They ignore the priorities that the Obama administration has imposed.
Last week, ICE officers deported Maribel Trujillo-Diaz, mother of 4 children born in the USA, who arrived in the USA 15 years ago and has no criminal record. She was expelled, despite requests from religious leaders of her community in Ohio.
DHS also deported 17-year-old Juan Montesa has lived in the USA since 9 years. He was twice entitled to protection against deportation under the DACA program, created by President Barack Obama and left unchanged by President Trump.
Due to the fact that Montes left his wallet in a friend's car, he could not immediately present his ID. He became the first undocumented immigrant with current DACA status, deported because of the migration policy of the Trump administration.
Grace Martinez, the children's rights director, who has DACA protection, says that the Montesa case proves that people like him are at risk, despite what Trump said.
The customs and border services said they could not comment on the Montesa case because of the department’s privacy policy.
For the first few months, Kelly gave complete freedom to immigration agents and officers, supporting them at every turn.
However, everyone needs guidance in order to do their work, especially when their work has vital implications for others. These non-existent priorities make DHS work more difficult and lead to an increase in separated families and people living in fear.
