A week later: Obama arrived in flooded Louisiana
President Barack Obama landed at Barton Rouge on Tuesday to see the devastation caused by the historic flood last week, and demonstrate with his presence that the federal government will provide assistance to those who have lost everything. The governor, the vice-governor and other officials met the president on the runway, reports The New York Times.
Obama arrived 4 the day after Donald Trump’s visit, which played into the presidential candidate's favor. Some Republicans and confused locals criticized the president, who was on vacation while people were being flooded.
Due to the large amount of rainfall, more than 7000 people were forced to stay in 37 shelters. As a result of a historic flood, 17 people died.
“If the president can interrupt his vacation to fundraise for fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton, as he did on Monday, then surely he can take the time to look at the disaster,” wrote local newspaper The Advocate.
This is Obama's first visit to Louisiana since hurricane-force winds and floods hit the state between Aug. 8 and Aug. 14, killing at least 13 people, destroying 60 buildings and forcing tens of thousands of residents to find temporary shelter. More than 000 people have applied for federal assistance. Currently $106 million has been allocated, writes “Voice of America«.
The president is going to assure the victims that the elimination of the consequences of the disaster is a priority task for the administration. He declared the 20 distress zone from the 64 districts of Louisiana, which speeds up the process of obtaining federal assistance.
Obama will visit the flood-hit area in East Baton Rouge and hear a report from federal authorities, emergency workers, and local politicians.
Before this, the president of 2 spent weeks with his family on Martas Vinjard, Massachusetts, which caused criticism in his address; it was suggested that he should interrupt his leave in order to visit the affected state.
