'Something more': Trump's military adviser says what the US president wants from Putin

White House National Security Advisor John Bolton said US President Donald Trump has a “very good personal relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump expressed the hope that they "will spill over into something more." Writes about it Voice of America.

“Trump believes that he has a very good personal relationship with President Putin. We had several meetings with him on a variety of issues. Just a couple of weeks ago, I met with my Russian counterpart and our mutual Israeli counterpart in Jerusalem,” Bolton said.

This tripartite meeting discussed issues related to Syria and the presence of Iran in Syria.

“We talk to them, we conduct a dialogue with them on the fight against terrorism. But, of course, we have differences on many issues,” the adviser added.

In addition, Bolton added that the US president hopes that a good relationship with the head of the Kremlin can grow into something more: "Trump hopes that personal relationships will result in something more."

He also noted that there were other reasons for the United States to withdraw from the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles, other than the violation of this Treaty by Russia. And these reasons threaten not only America, but also Russia. And this, in turn, becomes the common strategic interest of the two states.

“We negotiated with them regarding withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. We told them they had violated the treaty (they did), but we had other reasons for withdrawing because of the threat of Chinese medium-range missiles, which also threaten Russia, even more so than the United States. So I think there are shared strategic interests, especially with regard to China's growing military power. I spoke with Russian representatives about this. I think there will be other common interests,” Bolton said.

Also, the White House adviser did not pass over the question of Venezuela and hinted how Russia and China should behave in relation to the current situation.

“They must stop interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs. Russia and China must be very careful in their next steps. He also added that it is better for Russia and China to play safe and not support the regime of the current power of Venezuela.
