Did you know that half of the 272 million international migrants live in just 10 countries around the world? Since 1990, the total number of migrants worldwide has grown by about 119 million, according to the latest United Nations report on international migration. Most have arrived in Europe and North America, but an increasing number of immigrants are making North Africa and West Asia their home.

India has the largest number of overseas migrants (17,5 million), followed by Mexico and China (11,8 million and 10,7 million, respectively).

5. United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the number of migrants increased significantly from 2000 to 2015, almost doubling from 4,7 million to 8,5 million. This increase coincides with a significant influx of migrants from Eastern Europe after the EU enlargement in 2004. India, Poland and Pakistan are among the top three countries of birth for people most likely to move to the UK.

4. Russia

• 12 million immigrants
• 4,4% of the total number of migrants in the world

Russia is one of the few countries that actively encourages immigration. Despite this, the number of immigrants in the country has decreased over the past few years. Local authorities have not accepted the prospect of creating mono-ethnic communities for Chinese, Uzbeks, Tajiks and other ethnic groups in Russia and have even tried to ban them in some cases, hoping instead to promote integration into Russian society.

3. Saudi Arabia

Over the past decade, the number of immigrants in Saudi Arabia has grown more than in most other countries. This has led to the fact that almost a third of the country's population consists of immigrants. Between 2010 and 2015, the number of foreign-born Saudi Arabians increased by a staggering 93%. The UN report suggests that the country's government will introduce new rules to restrict immigration.

Thanks to its strong economy, Germany is one of the most popular destinations for immigrants. Factors that have influenced immigration to this country include: well-developed infrastructure, elite education system and membership in the Eurozone. However, Germany also employs highly skilled workers to permanently reside and work in the country.

• 51 million immigrants
• 19% of the total number of migrants in the world

The United States is undoubtedly the most popular destination for immigrants in the world. There are more than 51 million foreigners living in the United States, and there are almost four times more immigrants in this country than in any other. Interest in the United States has a lot to do with opportunity—economic and social. The United States is the largest economy in the world with one of the world's highest GDP per capita. The United States also offers well-developed infrastructure, financial markets, a strong education system, and religious freedoms.

Foreign workers

Many migrants send money home. Over the past few years, high-income countries have seen a slight decline in the number of migrant workers (from 112,3 million to 111,2 million). However, the largest increase was observed in upper-middle-income countries (from 17,5 million to 30,5 million). The United States remained the leading money-sending country. Trends for Countries with the Most Immigrants

From 1990 to 2019, the number of international migrants increased in 169 countries and decreased in 60 countries or regions. The United States recorded the largest increase in the immigrant population: plus 27,4 million between 1990 and 2019. Saudi Arabia posted the second largest growth (8,1 million), followed by the United Arab Emirates (7,3 million) and Germany (7,2 million). and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (5,9 million). By contrast, Pakistan's immigrant population declined by about 3,0 million from 1990 to 2019.

While the Trump administration has made efforts to curb US immigration, the coming Biden administration is expected to reverse that trend. Biden announced his intention to be more accommodating to refugees and migrant workers around the world.
