Navalny was denied registration as a presidential candidate.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of the Russian Federation refused to register the opposition candidate Alexei Navalny as a presidential candidate.

The reason for this was the conviction of the politician, reports “Currently,".

“The crime that Alexey Anatolyevich was charged with is classified as a serious crime. The criminal record remains, it has not been withdrawn or expunged,” said CEC member Boris Ebzeev, clarifying that such crimes are among those that prohibit holding the post of head of Russia or nominating oneself in presidential elections.”

At the same time, there were no comments on the execution of documents for Navalny.

“I don’t like the Central Election Commission, I guess you don’t like me either,” Navalny responded to the refusal.

“The Constitution says in black and white: “those who are legally capable and not in prison have the right to run for office,” the election commission is not like a place of prison,” the politician emphasized.

According to him, “there are candidates who do not even try to fight for votes, and there are pre-determined election results.”

In addition, Navalny called on his supporters to join the boycott of the 2018 presidential election of the year.

The corresponding appeal about the start of a “voter strike” was published on Navalny’s blog after his refusal to register as a presidential candidate.

“We are calling a voter strike. The procedure in which we are asked to participate is not an election. Only Putin and those candidates whom he personally chose and who do not pose the slightest threat to him are participating in it,” the politician said.

According to Navalny’s plan, from now on, all his election headquarters will become strike headquarters. Headquarters activists will campaign against the upcoming elections. The oppositionist suggested not to recognize the results of the vote and the power to be elected in these elections.

In a dispute with Navalny, CEC Chairwoman Ella Pamfilova said that the Commission cannot directly implement the decision of the European Court of Human Rights ECHR (it declared criminal cases against Navalny illegal), and cannot ignore the verdicts of Russian courts (in addition to the suspended sentence in the Kirovles case Navalny also received a suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case - both of them were declared illegal by the ECHR). Navalny responded that the commission, as an independent body, must evaluate all circumstances, including the decision of the European Court of Human Rights.

Recall that December 24 held meetings in twenty Russian cities initiative groups that nominated Alexei Navalny as a self-promoted candidate in the presidential elections in Russia.
