The United States has said it will not participate in the global initiative to create, produce and equitably distribute the COVID-19 vaccine, as WHO plays a leading role in this effort.

More than 170 countries are negotiating to participate in the global mechanism to ensure access to vaccines against COVID-19, a joint project of WHO and other organizations.

“The United States will continue to work with our international partners to defeat this virus, but we will not be held back by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere.

President Donald Trump announced in July that he was pulling the United States out of WHO, accusing the organization of failing to cope with the epidemic.

The Department of State said Wednesday, September 2, that the administration would therefore redirect the $ 62 million that was supposed to be paid to WHO in membership fees for this year to meet its obligations to the UN regular budget.

In terms of vaccine development efforts, Sury Moon, co-director of the Global Health Center at the Geneva Institute for International Affairs and Development Research, told the Washington Post that when the United States chooses “not to participate in any multilateral vaccine delivery effort, it hits the mark. ".

The Trump administration has launched its own COVID-19 vaccine initiative, Operation Warp Speed, which aims to deliver 300 million doses of the approved vaccine by January.

Through this initiative, several pharmaceutical companies have received billions of dollars to develop, manufacture and test a potential vaccine.

“The current president will spare no expense to ensure that the new vaccine meets the FDA gold standard, is thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness, and saves lives,” Deere said.
