Attacks, threats and refusals to wear masks: what passengers on airplanes do and how they are punished for it

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed new fines of $ 225 for an additional 287 passengers accused of reckless or violent behavior on recent flights. Writes about it KRON4.

This further underscores the increase in aircraft incidents reported to the FAA since January 1, 2021.

The agency imposed a $ 32 fine on one of the Horizon Air passengers who behaved aggressively on a flight from Austin (Texas) to San Francisco (California), and then "hit and shouted at her husband and son." She then threw trash at the crew member. The FAA noted that during the incident, the hooligan also "stole a cookie from a neighboring passenger."

Other egregious examples of bad behavior described by the FAA involved passengers who used profanity, used obscene gestures and threatened the flight crew, refused to comply with mask requirements, and physically assaulted or harmed flight attendants. In one case, a flight attendant required medical attention after a passenger hit her on a Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Chicago, Illinois.

Fines per passenger ranged from $ 9000 to $ 32. Now the FAA has the right to impose fines of up to $ 000 for each violation.

Since adopting its zero-tolerance policy for unruly passengers in January, the FAA has offered more than $ 1,3 million in fines.

Then the department noted the "alarming growth" of destructive behavior and stressed that the "spread" of such behavior increased "after the aggression on January 6, 2021 in the US Capitol."

In 2021 alone, the FAA received 5114 misconduct alarms on flights, including 3710 reports described as "mask-related." The agency took civil enforcement action (imposing fines) against 239 people.

In addition to the fines, the FAA sent 37 of its "most serious" cases to the FBI.

“Let this serve as both a warning and a deterrent: if you break the rules on a flight, you risk not only being fined by the FAA, but also facing federal criminal prosecution,” said FAA Administrator Steve Dixon.
