National Guardsman in Ukraine opened fire: 5 people were killed

In Ukraine, National Guard officer Artemy Ryabchuk killed five people on January 27 and wounded five more. Currently, the main version of the investigation is hazing in the unit where the shooter served. The edition told in more detail with the BBC.

The incident occurred in the Dnipro on the territory of the Pivdenmash machine-building plant at about 03:40, where a convoy of the National Guard was on duty.

When the servicemen were given weapons, Ryabchuk suddenly started shooting. In the video from the scene, which got into the network, it was recorded that the National Guardsman was returning and finishing off the wounded.

As a result, four National Guardsmen and one plant worker died on the spot. Another five were injured and were taken to the hospital.

Advisor to the Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko said that Ryabchuk fired three bullets point-blank at a 22-year-old girl who served in the National Guard.

“The girl was wounded in the knee, shoulder and heavy in the stomach. Now in the surgery of the Mechnikov hospital they are fighting for her life. She lost more than three liters of blood,” Gerashchenko wrote on Facebook.

The footage shows the shooter carrying weapons and ammunition with him and then running away. As a result of the interception operation, he was detained a few hours later in the city of Podgorodnoye, Dnepropetrovsk region.

What is known about the shooter and his motives

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD), Artemy Ryabchuk is 21 years old. He comes from the city of Izmail, Odessa region.

“He was a conscript. He grew up without a father, ”explains Anton Gerashchenko.

According to Ukrainian media, Ryabchuk worked at a warehouse of a private enterprise in the Odessa region before being drafted, and received a secondary technical education.

He left for military service in the fall of 2021.

On January 27, he and other employees of the National Guard were on guard at the Pivdenmash machine-building plant.

Later, a video of operatives posted on the network, in which Ryabchuk spoke about the details of the crime on camera. According to him, he shot at the National Guardsmen who were on duty. One of them managed to escape.

The conscript explained why he shot at women - a girl from the National Guard, who was seriously injured, and a plant employee who died on the spot.

“I knew that the operator contacts the unit every 30 minutes and tells the situation. So that she would not report, I shot at her, ”Ryabchuk explained.

An employee of the plant, according to him, was sitting at the entrance and did not want to let him out of the enterprise.

“So I shot her in the head,” added the National Guard.

After that, he still couldn't open the door, so he cut the barbed wire and climbed over the fence.

The man's motives are still unknown.

A deputy from the Servant of the People party, a member of the law enforcement committee, Yulia Yatsyk, said that, according to her information, Ryabchuk was persecuted in the service.

“Two months ago he warned a fight between soldiers. Reported this to management. But they did not take any measures, they recognized him as a “snitch” and began to mock him. He specifically waited two months to get a machine gun and take revenge. He does not regret what he has done,” Yatsyk wrote on Facebook.

She stressed that this “does not justify the behavior of the National Guard”, but may be the basis for holding other officials accountable.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed that they would conduct an investigation into whether he was subjected to pressure and harassment in the team.

The question also raises how he passed the medical examination, according to the conclusions of which the National Guardsman was given access to military weapons.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), Ryabchuk himself contacted law enforcement officers and surrendered to them.

In particular, Vladimir Shilov, Deputy Director of the Territorial Directorate of the SBI in Poltava, who is at the scene of the incident, said that Ryabchuk, while in the village, asked a random woman to call the police and report his whereabouts.

For the committed National Guardsman is threatened with punishment up to life imprisonment.

The main version - hazing

Subsequently, the SBI communications adviser Tatyana Sapyan said that Artemy Ryabchuk was handed a suspicion under three articles of the Criminal Code: premeditated murder, desertion, and appropriation of weapons and ammunition from military personnel.

The prosecutor's office will demand a measure of restraint in the form of detention without the right to make bail.

The investigation is considering several versions, including hazing in the unit.

Specialists of the State Bureau of Investigation are already checking the information that appeared earlier, as if the murder was preceded by persecution of Ryabchuk by colleagues after he reported on a fight between the National Guardsmen two months ago.

According to them, it is planned to conduct an examination of the mental state of the suspect, as well as whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crime.

Among other things, the State Bureau of Investigation expressed indignation that the media promptly got videos of the shooting and how the operatives were interrogating the detainee about the crime committed.

“The media got the videos faster than we got to know them,” Sapyan protested. – I would like this process to be controlled. And if he is uncontrollable and violates the law, then people should be held accountable. The State Bureau of Investigation will now investigate how this video appeared - both the video from the cameras, and the video with the interrogation, and the video of the detention.”
