In Ukrainian and English: Immigrant Family Unveils Book of Children's Tales in San Francisco

A presentation of a collection of English folk songs and fairy tales for children took place in San Francisco - the book was translated into Ukrainian for the first time. This was done by an immigrant from Chernivtsi, IT specialist Rostislav Buchko. And his artist wife illustrated the book. The family published a bilingual book at their own expense.

After a working day, IT specialist Rostislav Buchko writes the Ukrainian translation of famous children's English poems, which became songs, into his phone. These songs are popular in America and Europe, they can be heard in cartoons and movies, tells Voice of America.

“This is not work, this is pleasure,” admits Rostislav.

He says that tired, after a long working day, to work even better: come up with the most interesting words.

It all started when Rostislav tried to translate several songs for his daughter.

“The little spider climbs like a drain,
Board Pishov and the winter of humility,
Sonze zіyshlo і visokh drain,
And the little spider crawled all over again.”

“She loves cartoons where a specific song is in the background. And I translated this song into Ukrainian. Knowing that the child loves this song, I wanted to sing it, and then translated something else,” says Rostislav.

One day, father and daughter found the book “100 Tales of Mother Goose” on the street. This is a collection of English and Scottish folklore. Leafing through the pages, Rostislav discovered many poems that became popular songs.

“These songs, although English, are quite popular all over the world. Some are less popular, some more,” says Rostislav. “The world learned about some of them from Alice in Wonderland.”

Therefore, Rostislav began to translate. I tried to make the translation as close as possible to Ukrainian culture. Jack Horner is Grigory Nalivaiko, King Kohl is Hetman Bogdan, and the tart is a pie.

The work lasted three years. The book was illustrated by his wife, artist Julia Kosivchuk. In August of this year, they presented the book in Chernivtsi, and in September they presented it in Ukrainian California.

“We know the English translation, we know the Russian translation,” says Diana Polyakova, a visitor to the presentation. “I am very grateful that a Ukrainian translation has appeared, and I want my children to know this in Ukrainian.”

Rostislav published the book “100 Tales of Mother Goose” at his own expense. He hopes that his work will help young Ukrainians get acquainted with the culture of other peoples, and has already planned to write another children's book.
