56 migrants died on a boat in the Atlantic: the surviving girl told what happened

On April 26, a Spanish Air Force rescue team discovered a tiny boat drifting in the Atlantic Ocean. Three barely living migrants were found on board, dozens of others died from dehydration and hunger, says Air force.

A total of 59 migrants went from Mauritania to the Spanish shores.

Among the survivors was Aisha, a seventeen-year-old native of Côte d'Ivoire. She was rescued, in serious condition she was sent to a hospital on the island of Tenerife.

After their recovery, Aisha and her rescuers shared the details of the story with the BBC.

On April 26, a Spanish Air Force plane found a tiny ship that had gone out of control on the high seas.

A military helicopter was sent to the rescue.

“When we went down, we saw that things were bad,” say Air Force employees. “We stumbled upon a mass grave on the high seas. No course can prepare you for such situations.”

Among the pile of dead bodies, only three people remained on the ship, showing signs of life. Among the survivors was Aisha, she is 17 years old.

“They were in a deplorable state,” rescuers say.

The boat was out of control for 22 days. The people were extremely dehydrated.

“After two days of travel, we ran out of food and fresh water,” says Aisha. “Four days later the diesel fuel in the engine ran out.”

The current carried the boat with migrants far from the areas where the routes of the merchant ships pass. When Aisha was found, 56 people had already died.

“At first we prayed for salvation,” says the girl. “But then there was no strength left for it.” I didn’t even have the strength to throw dead bodies overboard.”

Ten days after Aisha was rescued, Corporal Juan Carlos Serrano wanted to introduce his family to her. The Serrano family came to visit Aisha with gifts and an offer.

“We are happy to help you,” they said. “If you want, you can stay with us.”

“I’m so glad that they exist,” the girl admitted. “It’s like I have a family.”

The migrants who died in the boat will be buried in a cemetery in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Alas, this is not the last mission of its kind, Serrano noted. But his rescue team is there for that.
