Overbooking also happens on cruises: an American lost $ 6 due to the fact that the company canceled her reservation
Cruises are in full swing again, but the resurgence of the industry, in addition to stiffer competition for sun loungers, has brought passengers a new headache - overloaded ships (overbooking). Now a family could lose nearly $6 in airfare and hotel accommodation after being kicked off an overcrowded cruise ship. The edition told in more detail Business Insider.
Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises have experienced a flood of overbookings in recent months. According to industry blog Cruise Hive, the world's largest cruise ship, the Wonder of the Seas, has been overloaded three times in the past six months.
Like airlines, cruise lines can sell more seats than they physically have as a buffer against last-minute cancellations. When something goes wrong, cruise lines offer various types of compensation to guests to encourage them to change their travel plans.

On those rare occasions when not enough people voluntarily reschedule their trip, some guests may receive a dreadful email that their trip has been cancelled.
That is exactly what happened to Diane Gainey, 68, and her family, who were notified late last month that their September cruise aboard Celebrity Millennium had been overbooked. When she refused to reschedule a 12-day cruise from Japan, her travel agent informed her that Celebrity Cruises had canceled her sailing.
A spokesperson for Celebrity Cruises said the company is constantly monitoring flights to ensure there are no disruptions to guests' travel plans. To avoid potential overbooking issues, the cruise line offers guests the option to voluntarily select another tour and onboard credit to use on their next vacation.
When her September cruise was canceled, Gainey was left with two options: reschedule her $8000 three-person booking for a similar cruise next year, or cancel the trip and receive a full refund. Celebrity Cruises has offered to cover $500 of additional expenses, specifically for airfare.

But to travel from the US to Tokyo, the cruise ship's port of departure (Gainey), according to receipts, has already spent almost $6 on airfare and hotel reservations.
According to her, the flights of her family are not subject to return and transfer to other persons. They cannot change their flights to the dates of the next available cruise in 2024 because the airline's schedule is not available that far in advance.
“I was really stuck in limbo,” she admitted. “I don’t even know if I’ll be alive in a year and a half.”
