Divers exploring a drifting whale carcass off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, came face to face with a great white shark. The encounter prompted state officials to warn other divers and snorkelers to stay out of the water near the dead animal. The group took photos and videos of the rare white shark, the largest in nature.

The small tiger sharks left after eating a dead whale, and in their place great whites swam in - possibly pregnant, diver Ocean Ramsey told reporters, quoted SF Gate.

“She was just a beautiful gentle giant who wanted to use our boat to get scratched,” said Ramsey, who posted images of the encounter on Instagram. “We went out into the ocean at dawn and she stayed with us most of the day.”

Ramsey studies sharks, defends the need to protect them and conducts diving tours without using cages. The diver and her team observe and identify sharks and share this data with state and federal partners.

According to Ramsey, the waters in Hawaii are usually too warm for large white sharks compared to the Pacific coast of California, where they feed on sea lions and elephant seals.

She estimated that this shark was over 6 meters long and 2,4 meters wide.

A giant white shark could swim to these shores due to hunger and the need for additional nutrients during pregnancy.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources of Hawaii stated that the body of a decaying whale drifted about eight miles (13 kilometers) south of Pearl Harbor after being towed 15 miles (24 kilometers) offshore a few days earlier.

The department reported that tiger sharks "almost continuously" feed on the whale, and said that he was aware of the photos of the great white shark. Jason Redull, the head of the agency’s security and resources department, recommended everyone to stay away from the dead whale.

“We don't want anyone to get hurt if a shark swimming around a carcass mistakes a person for food. “It’s understandable that some people want to be in the water for a hobby or for a photo, but being near this carcass with so much shark activity is really dangerous,” he added.

The agency reports that people climbed onto a whale carcass and removed its teeth, which can be considered a violation of state and federal laws.

Officials said the whale’s body was now drifting offshore, but the alleged change in the wind could push him back toward Oahu.

Ramsey believes that the shark can be famous Deep Blue, given its size and characteristic features. Deep Blue is considered the largest white shark ever seen in nature.

"The big pregnant sharks are actually the safest ones - the biggest ones, the oldest ones - they've seen it all, including us," Ramsey said. “That’s why I call her Grandma Shark.”

Sharks usually bite only when they are curious, or when they take people for their natural prey, but they are unpredictable, the diver noted.
