The organizers of the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championship held in Stuttgart, Germany, twice confused the Russian national anthem at the awards ceremony following the results of the hoop exercise.

The victory in the exercise with a hoop at the World Cup was won by Russian woman Margarita Mamun. The second was the Russian Alexandra Soldatova, the third - the Ukrainian Anna Rizatdinova.

The organizers turned on the wrong melody twice, after which the stands sang the hymn of Russia and the choir to loud applause. Mamun thanked the rostrum for their support.

“Yes, they mixed up our anthem. But on the contrary, it really supported me that the stands were singing. It was a pleasure. It’s even better, more patriotic,” Margarita commented on the incident.

A similar story happened the day before at the World Championships in wrestling in the United States. There, during the ceremony of awarding Roman Vlasov, the organizers included instead of the modern anthem of Russia his old version for authorship of Glinka. The winner refused to leave the pedestal and waited for the right melody, the championship organizers apologized.

Surprisingly, in the ongoing series of scandals, Russian athletes are to blame themselves. The fact is that it was they who in the fall of 2000 had complained to President Vladimir Putin about the impossibility of singing the anthem during the award ceremonies due to the lack of words in the Patriotic Song. Football players of the national team were the first to start talking about this, they were joined by Olympians who had returned from the summer games in Sydney.

Vladimir Putin listened to the athletes, and in December of the same year a hymn appeared with words to the old music of Alexander Alexandrov from the USSR hymn.
