In the Bahamas, a shark attacked a tourist from the United States: the woman died

An American tourist has died.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was snorkeling with a group of five to seven relatives when she was attacked by a blunt-nosed shark on Green Cay shortly after 14 p.m., Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said at a press conference.

The area is located about 2,5 kilometers northwest of Rose Island, a private island off Nassau.
The woman, officially aged 58, showed no signs of life after the attack, Skippings said.
According to Skippings, she arrived in the Bahamas on a cruise ship on September 6 in the morning. A private tour boat took her group for a snorkeling trip off Rose Island.
Family members witnessed the attack. Together with a tour operator, they pulled her out of the water and took her by boat to Fort Montague in Nassau, Skippings said.
The area has been cordoned off and closed to diving enthusiasts indefinitely.
"It's just an unfortunate situation," Skippings said.
According to the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, the last recorded shark attack in the Bahamas occurred in 2018. It states that blunt-nosed sharks are among the most common shark species when it comes to unprovoked attacks on humans.

They are large, capable of causing serious injury, commonly found where people enter the water, and have teeth designed to cut rather than hold, as the museum's Species Manual says.
