Defense Department chief Lloyd Austin and General Mark Millie, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were in attendance at a scheduled presidential daily meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House when the Pentagon incident took place.
According to the official, investigators are still working at the place where everything happened. Pentagon officials "will fully cooperate with local and federal authorities," he added. Austin has stayed away for now "out of respect" for the investigators who need to work.

The Pentagon is served by dozens of bus routes with yellow and blue metro lines. The station is the eighth busiest station on the DC metro system. It serves more than 2400 passengers daily, up from an average of 15 per day before the pandemic.
According to the National Fraternal Order of Police, as of July 31 in 2021, 185 police officers were injured, 35 of whom were killed in the shootout.
