A powerful ice storm will cover a huge part of the USA: what to prepare for
More than 50 million people are at risk of the winter storm. Snow and ice will cover the area from Texas to New Jersey (approximately 1 miles / 700 km). The edition told in more detail CNN.
"The two storms will bring multiple hazards," the Weather Prediction Center said.
The ice storm will stretch from Arkansas to Kentucky. This could bring major urban areas to a standstill in the next few days.
Ice storm
Frozen drizzle and ice have already begun to fall in most areas. This continued for most of the day on Wednesday 10 February, with more snow expected on Thursday 11 February.
Ice storm warnings are in effect in cities such as Little Rock, Arkansas, Memphis, Tennessee, and Lexington, Kentucky, where half an inch (1,3 cm) of ice or more is expected. Ice accumulations as small as half an inch can put stress on power lines and trees. Some areas have not seen such bad weather in years.

“This could be one of the worst weeks in eastern Kentucky in more than a decade,” says the National Weather Service office in Jackson, Kentucky.
“Significant ice accumulation will make travel hazardous or impossible,” the NWS said. “Ice accumulation and winds will likely result in downed power lines and falling tree limbs, adding to the danger.”

The NWS recommends, among other things: if you need to travel, keep a spare flashlight, food and water in your car in case you get stuck on the road. People should also make sure they have enough food and warm blankets in case the electricity goes out for a few days.
It is difficult to accurately predict where exactly the bulk of ice accumulation will occur. Any small change in temperature profiles will lead to changes in precipitation types, which will then lead to changes in ice accumulations,” the NWS says. This explains why one city gets huge amounts of ice, while another gets only rain or snow.

"This weather pattern is really like a textbook ice storm," said CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller. — We have warm spring temperatures in the Southeast, while bitterly cold Arctic air moves down through the central United States to meet warm air along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Where these two airs meet, warm air rises and cooler air remains near the surface, causing precipitation to fall as rain but freeze at the surface.”
Snow in the Mid Atlantic
Another snowfall is expected in the mid Atlantic on Thursday and Friday (February 11-12). Locations such as Washington DC and Philadelphia are likely to receive 2 to 3 inches (5-7,6 cm) of snow, with much of it outside the city.

Much more will be in the interior of Virginia and West Virginia. In parts of West Virginia, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, snow levels will reach 4 to 6 inches (10-15 cm).
Over 6 million people are on warnings about dangerous winds from Montana to Michigan and south to Nebraska. Temperatures will drop sharply as cold air spreads across much of the country, with dozens of record lows possible in the south.
By the end of the weekend into early next week, temperatures below freezing will reach as far as the southern Texas coast.
