Hotel scam: Family lost $6000 while ordering room service

One unsuspecting family lost over $6000 when they ordered food in their room while staying at a famous hotel, reports New York Post.

“You need to be careful about this dangerous hotel dining scam,” TikToker Ali Koca warned his 1,8 million followers. “This family was staying at the hotel and decided to order room service using the father’s debit card.”

In a video that has racked up a staggering 1,9 million views, Toronto's Koja shares a cautionary tale from an unnamed family in front of a green screen image of the Holiday Inn Express. However, the location of the incident, as well as the specific hotel, were not disclosed.

After calling a phone number that the family believed was the hotel's room service line, the family placed a food order and provided the father's credit card information to the alleged employee over the phone.

“They waited for more than an hour and a half, and the food never arrived,” Koca said. “So my father called the front desk to ask where his order was, but they told him they didn’t receive any orders from his room.”

In a panic, the man logged into his online banking platform and found that “more than $6000 of his money had been withdrawn in the last hour and a half,” the viral vigilante claimed.

“It turns out the room service menu they called was slipped under the door,” Koca added.

“This scam is not that uncommon,” he continued. - Scammers will slip a fake room service menu under your door, hoping you'll order from it. And once you give them your debit card information, they can log into your account and withdraw as much money as they want.”

And online viewers have agreed that this room service scam is constantly sucking the blood out of unwary hotel guests.

"Yes! This is so true! I worked at the front desk and this happens so often. Never order from these flyers!!!! Usually these are pizza flyers,” said one commentator. “They should never ask for card information when you order room service, they just bring the order and then add it to the bill.”

And Koca recommended how to avoid this sinister piece of hotel hell.

“The best way to fight this scam is to call the front desk before ordering food and ask them to confirm that the menu you are ordering from is the correct one,” he advised.
