Millions of unusual creatures are thrown onto the beaches in Oregon. VIDEO
On the coast in Oregon, bewildered millions of unusual creatures that residents have never seen in these parts. This phenomenon confused them.
“Of course we had different creatures, but I don’t remember these guys, and there are so many of them,” said Phyllis Ham, who lives in Oceanside.
"I don't know what it is, but it's creepy," said Aaron Davis, who traveled to the Oregon Coast from Montana.
Creatures resembling translucent pickles are called Pyrosomes or in translation Each of them actually consists of hundreds of individual organisms.
The main problem is that they should not be here. They are usually located far from the sea in the tropics. But this weekend they began to appear in the millions on the beaches of Oregon.
Jim Young, a retired marine biologist from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and other researchers at the University of Oregon believe that warmer ocean waters off the coast might have been lured Pyrosomes.
“They typically live in warmer waters, but our waters off the coast have warmed up a little,” Young said.
Researchers say that Pyrosomes may affect coastal life.
“The only danger is if there are too many of them and they sink to the bottom, it can create a dead zone,” Young said.
Pyrosomes fall apart over the next few weeks. They will not harm when touched, but over time they become a bit slippery and produce an unpleasant smell.
