Mikhail Khodorkovsky spent 10 years (from 2003 to 2013) in prison on charges of tax evasion by the Yukos oil company, of which he was a co-founder and leader. At the time of his arrest, Khodorkovsky was one of the richest people in the world, his fortune was estimated at 15 billion dollars. This week Russian Forbes found the assets of a Russian businessman in the US worth 2 billion.
Amnesty International in 2011 called Khodorkovsky a prisoner of conscience. In December 2013, he was pardoned by Putin’s decree and released from custody.
In March 2014, a public figure spoke at the Independence Square in Kiev and accused the Russian authorities of complicity in the murder of Ukrainian protesters. In January, 2015 called on the Russian authorities to release another political prisoner - Nadezhda Savchenko, Ukrainian pilot, whom Russia accuses of killing journalists and illegally crossing the border.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky founded a non-governmental organization aimed at creating a strong civil society in Russia - Open Russia.
In the fall of 2014 in Paris, he said he was ready to become the Russian president in order to carry out a constitutional reform, redistributing presidential power "in favor of the court, parliament and civil society."
