Mass shooting in Sacramento: 6 dead, 10 injured

Pop duo Aly & AJ said they had to hide during the mass shooting in Sacramento - six people were killed and several were wounded, reports New York Post.

“Our bus was caught in the crossfire but we hid and everyone in our tour group is fine. Thanks to everyone who responded,” the sisters, Alison, 33, and AJ Michalka, 30, tweeted.

“This is a reminder that today you need to be as close to your dear people as possible. We have to do something about gun violence in this country,” they said.

In another tweet, they wrote that they were "mad" about the shooting in downtown Sacramento on April 3 in the afternoon.

“Our thoughts are with the families of those who died and are recovering today. We pray for the medical workers who care for them. We hope all of our fans made it home safely,” they added.

Families have so far identified the two dead: Sergio Harris, a 38-year-old married father of two daughters, and DeVasia Turner, 29, of Vacaville.

Another man and three women were killed and 12 people were injured when shots were fired around 2 am. Crowds of people were just leaving bars and nightclubs. Four of those hospitalized have life-threatening injuries.

With Harris, "it was fun, he loved parties, fun and smiled all the time," Pamela Harris, the victim's mother, told the publication.

“I have a child there and I want answers. I just want someone to answer,” the mother said, according to New York Post.

According to preliminary data, at least two shooters opened fire. As of the morning of April 4, the suspects remained at large. Police have asked the public for help in identifying the shooters.

Singer Kali Uchis, who was one of the opening acts at the Golden 1 Center, also tweeted about the massacre. “Devastated by mass shooting last night in Sacramento near where we performed,” Uchis wrote.

“Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We pray that those affected will recover quickly and that all participants in our show will safely get home, ”she added.

According to the publication, on April 3, a picket took place in Cesar Chavez Square, during which dozens of members of the community prayed and called for an end to senseless violence.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said the shooting is "another horrific act of gun violence," saying his administration is working closely with local and state law enforcement, reports NPR.

Sacramento Police Chief Cathy Lester told reporters on the evening of April 3 that footage of the violence was captured by a police camera at an intersection near the shooting. The chief also said that the police seized a stolen gun from the scene.

The police were in the area and rushed to the scene when they heard gunshots, Lester said. They hurried to find out what happened and give the victims artificial respiration, she added.

Berry Akcius, a nonprofit leader helping youth in the area, told Capital Public Radio that he went to the center less than an hour after the shooting.

“When I arrived, I saw the victim, who was injured, covered in blood, and another man screaming for his son. Another woman was screaming, saying she saw her sister die,” he said.

The shooting broke out on the corner of 10th and K Streets, near the California State Capitol, around 2 a.m., according to the Sacramento Police Department's Facebook page.

Video from mobile phones circulating online shows a fight between a large crowd of people on the sidewalk in the area of ​​the shooting. The footage shows people fleeing as the first shots are fired, followed by dozens more shots. It is not yet known how this scandal could be linked to the shooting.

Investigators found "hundreds of clues at the scene," Lester said.

“What happened last night is the biggest and most recent example of what we all know,” the police chief said. “Gun violence is a real crisis in our community, and it has increased not only here in Sacramento, but across the country.”
