Low-income residents of New York will ride the subway at half price
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and city council chairman Corey Johnson reached an agreement to fund the Fair Fares program, which will help create a more equitable public transportation system in New York, the city administration’s mayor’s press service reported.
According to the signed document, the administration will put 106 millions of dollars in the budget for the 2019 fiscal year, this money will go to cover half the cost of public transport for New Yorkers with an annual income below the poverty line, which is about 25 000 dollars for a family of four in year.
According to the city administration, around 800 000 able-bodied residents of New York will be eligible to participate in the program and will be able to save up to 726 dollars a year in cost Metrocard.
“We must make New York a city that works for all of its 8,6 million residents, because ultimately justice will determine our future. That's why the City will commit more than $100 million to help low-income New Yorkers access one of the most important forms of public transportation we have: the subway.
