Wildfire in California destroyed an entire city: the scale of destruction is shocking
The McKinney Fire has turned the California town of Klamath River into a spooky ruin. Writes about it USA Today.
Klamath River Community Hall has been known to community members as a one-stop venue for weddings, Christmas pageants, fundraisers and funerals, Klamath River Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Janet Jones said. According to her, among other things, firefighters trained there.
But there is no trace of this building. The sign of the community center that was not damaged by the fire is all that remains.
The out-of-control McKinney Fire - the largest in California in 2022 - had burned more than 4 acres (57 hectares) as of the morning of August 23. The fire first broke out southwest of the Klamath River in the Klamath National Forest. As of the evening of August 3, it is localized by 10%.

According to the Ciskew County Sheriff's Office, four people have died. Thousands of people have been evacuated. It's unclear what caused the fire, but earlier this week a US Forest Service unit posted on Facebook that it "apparently" was not caused by lightning.

“It’s very sad,” Derry said. “Some of our oldest houses, 100-year-old houses, are no longer there. This is a small community. The majority of people are good, and will rebuild over time. But now it will take some time."
