Life hacks from a flight attendant: 10 things you should not do during a flight
Flight attendant Arina Bloom has worked for 2 years on domestic and international flights and has seen different behaviors on airplanes. She gives some important advice on what should never be done in flight, reports INSIDER.
Life jackets under the seats are not yours to steal
“I never thought it would be a problem, but some people think a life jacket would be a good souvenir,” says Arina.
Not only is it stealing, she says, but you could also endanger the next passenger who sits in that seat.
Flush the toilet after you
If you don't know exactly how to use the toilet on an airplane, feel free to ask the flight attendants.
“It’s not every day that you fly on a plane, but there are so many buttons. But don’t walk away and hope no one notices, says the flight attendant. — An airplane is a very small space. We usually have one toilet in the front and two in the back, so everyone can tell when you haven’t flushed.”
It may be better not to take medications that will make you sleepy during the flight.
“When I started flying in 2019, I noticed that a passenger had lost consciousness. I tried to wake him up by shaking him, but he didn’t react, so I panicked and called my colleagues for help,” says Arina. “I was going to ask for help from a medical professional on board or provide first aid. But it turned out that the passenger did not sleep well, and it seemed that he had taken some kind of sleeping pills.”
You may not want to scare the crew by taking sleeping pills in flight.
Too Much Baggage on a Plane Makes Life Difficult for Everyone
Some passengers are completely covered in sweat from too many personal items, backpacks and hand luggage.
It is much easier to check in your luggage and go to the plane relaxed and stress-free. It is also not always possible to find a place for all the bags.
“ If you are concerned about additional charges, please ask the gate attendant. They are usually happy to check luggage for free if the flight is full,” she says.
Never drink personal alcohol on board
“We constantly catch people drinking small bottles of alcohol. Even if you think there is no flight attendant nearby, you will be surprised how often other passengers tell us about it,” says Arina.

It's not allowed, and you could be banned from future flights with the airline if you get caught, so it's not worth the risk.
Crew members cannot help you place your carry-on luggage in the overhead bins
Sometimes passengers ask flight attendants to help lift their carry-on luggage to the overhead bins. But this is not the responsibility of flight attendants. If the bag is too heavy, it is better to check it in as luggage.
Don't go to the restroom when the flight attendants are holding a safety demonstration
Before takeoff, you can go to the toilet. But when you see the flight attendants doing a safety demonstration, you should stay in your seats and wait until the seat belt sign goes out.

“When passengers stand up during a safety demonstration, we need to stop, wait and start again when everyone returns to their seats,” explains Arina.
Always wipe trays in seatbacks before using them
“You might think that people only put drinks on seat-back trays, but the person before you may have slept on it or used it to change a baby's diaper,” she says. — My airline gives out little alcohol wipes during boarding for a reason. Just quickly wipe down the tray when you sit down.”
Never go to the bathroom without shoes
The bathroom is probably the dirtiest place on the plane. And all the liquid you see on the floor is not just water.
Also, if you just put on socks, they will get wet. Who needs it for the whole flight?
Don't be silent if you feel bad
“I have had passengers feel dizzy or panic attacks, but they were too shy to tell anyone, says the flight attendant. “You don't have to deal with pain or discomfort on your own before landing. Always tell the flight attendant about this. We may have technology or equipment that can help.”
