The composer of the animated series 'Masha and the Bear' lives and writes music in Las Vegas

In a private house in Las Vegas (Nevada), away from the noisy casinos and restaurants, songs are sung that children all over the world sing.

Vasily Bogatyrev lives here, the same composer who has been writing music for the popular Russian animated series “Masha and the Bear” for more than 10 years, says “Voice of America".

He worked with Kristina Orbakaite, Vlad Stashevsky, played guitar with Sophia Rotaru, but Masha and the Bear became the world-famous project, loved by viewers on different continents.

“I came to America in 2007. I didn’t have a job, I went to Moscow with Rotaru, performed on these filmings - I took on any job. And once again, when I arrived in Moscow, director Kuzovkov called me and said: “Vasya, we will make a cartoon. You wrote music for circus shows, for advertising... Maybe you’ll try it?” said the composer.

The task was to write something that would be loved and remembered by the audience just like “Well, wait a minute”.

“When I found out that the episode would only be 6 minutes long, and they were paying by the minute, I realized that I wouldn’t make any money. Then I gave myself instructions so that the music did not stop from beginning to end, so that I would be paid in exactly six minutes,” Bogatyrev admitted.

And, like all brilliant, famous songs for the cartoon, according to the composer, were written very simply.

“They gave me pictures of a bear walking with a samovar, it wasn’t even a cartoon yet. And I took a stand with a microphone, put it between my legs, turned on the program and thought: here is a bear walking and something is going on under his breath, “boom-boom-boom”... I figured out the tempo as he walked, set the metronome and turned on the headphones and I start humming. I recorded one, the next track, then the chord came out, then I added more drums and it was all with my voice, I didn’t even want to turn on the keys, nothing,” said Bogatyrev.

Together with Masha, he went through difficult life trials and a complex heart operation. When asked if the composer was afraid of getting tired of the cartoon, he answers this way: “I had a fear: I sit down at the piano, but have no thoughts. And then they send me a new series, I sit and think: “Damn, what should I write?.. I have to get the music from somewhere.” A composer today is not one who composes, but one who does not steal from another. I’m sitting here and don’t know what to do. I turn it on and forget myself - I’m completely in the cartoon, I’m like a child, I forget myself and lose myself in the cartoon. And I can’t think anymore, but my hands, as if someone were directing them, press the keys.”

Bogatyrev is a one-man orchestra, playing several instruments. Sometimes he also sings.

The first is that later millions of children will sing around the world, hears the wife of Vasily Inessa.

“I also work from a home office and so often I listen to one tune a thousand times. And that’s why I know all these episodes by heart. Maybe I don’t see them, because Vasya himself works there in his office, and I in mine, but I can hear them,” said the composer’s wife.

Now Bogatyrev is working on an entire album of songs from a popular cartoon, and very soon he will see the light.
