Mosquitoes spread several types of virus per bite

Two studies, the results of which were presented at a meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, proved that the Zika virus affects human health when interacting with the Chikuguya virus and Dengue fever.

One group of scientists discovered that mosquitoes can identify the Zika virus and the Chicugunya virus and at the same time, in theory, infect humans with both viruses in one bite.

A second team of scientists found a number of unusual symptoms in Brazil last year. People were infected with Zika virus, Chikugunya virus and Dengue fever at the same time. The last fever is known as the "syndrome of dancing eyes and dancing legs."

“Our analysis shows that each of these viruses can cause a range of neurological complications, some very severe, and patients should be monitored for symptoms,” said Dr. Isadora Siqueira of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil. “It is very difficult to determine whether combining Zika with other infections increases the risk of neurological problems.” We continue to closely monitor patients who are infected with both Chikugunya virus and Dengue fever."

Dengue fever and Zika virus are closely related and belong to the flavovirus family. Chikugunya virus belongs to another family called alphaviruses. But all 3 “sores” are spread by the yellow fever mosquito, and they cause similar symptoms: fever, headache and body pain. Zika causes serious birth defects, Dengue fever can cause fatal hemorrhagic fever, and Chikugunya causes excruciating pain.

They are not easy to distinguish from each other, and only thanks to the tests found in recent months, doctors can certainly tell what kind of virus the patient had.

All of them can also cause rare neurological side effects, and doctors have wondered how people infected with several viruses differ from those who have become infected with one.

Research results in northeastern Brazil prove that symptoms differ. According to studies, 21 has reported a case of neurological diseases, including Guillain-Barré syndrome, a strange paralyzing condition that can be caused by a variety of viruses, including Zika.

A team at the University of Colorado conducted research on mosquitoes for 2 viruses. Claudia Rückert and her colleagues tested a yellow-fevering mosquito for Zika and Chikugunya. The tests were positive.

“Their saliva tested positive for both viruses, which could mean that people bitten by this mosquito species could become infected with both viruses at once,” Rueckert said.
