A whale tried to eat a fisherman in Massachusetts: a man spent 40 seconds in the giant's mouth

A Massachusetts diver said he was nearly swallowed by a whale during a horrific morning encounter at Cape Cod in Provincetown on Friday, June 11. Michael Packard has been hunting lobster for 40 years, but he has never experienced anything like it. This unusual incident was reported by the publication CBS Local.

Packard recalls jumping from the boat into the water and immediately "felt a strong blow, everything went dark." At first he feared that he was attacked by a shark.

The 56-year-old Packard, he said, was at a depth of about 45 feet (14 meters) when it happened, writes ABC12.

“And then I looked around and realized that the animal had no teeth,” he explained. “My God, the thought flashed through my mind, I’m in the mouth of a whale, and he’s trying to swallow me.”

In Packard's head, thoughts swarmed, "That's it, I'm going to die." He thought about his children, his wife and realized that he could not get out of the mouth of the animal.

“Then the whale suddenly rose to the surface and began shaking its head. I was thrown into the air and fell into the water,” Packard recalled. “I was free and just floating. It was hard to believe!”

Packard's comrade pulled him out of the water. He was afraid that his legs were broken, but everything turned out to be in order. Michael was discharged from the hospital on the same day, and he could walk, albeit with a limp.

Provincetown Rescue Service confirmed that they answered a call at 08:15, which reported an injured diver.

The story of the incident went viral on social media. Michael estimated that he was in the mouth of a whale for 30-40 seconds.

“It happened so quickly! - said a stunned Packard. “My only thought was how to get out.”

Peter Corkeron, senior researcher at the New England Aquarium, explained that when hunting for food, humpback whales "can open their mouths incredibly wide."

“This is a very unusual situation. The chance of this happening is one in a trillion,” he said. “He was just unlucky and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Corkeron noted that whales are usually not interested in disturbing humans. But if they are in the water, it is recommended to keep 100 yards (90 m) away from the whale at all times.

"Whales are big and strong, and if something goes wrong when you're around them, it can be very dangerous," he said.

Charles Mayo, a senior researcher and whale expert at the Coastal Research Center in Provincetown, told the newspaper that such human-whale encounters are rare.

Humpbacks are not aggressive, and Mayo believes it was a chance encounter when the whale was feeding on fish.
