The famous artist's painting hung upside down in the museum for decades.

One of the paintings by the famous Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian called New York City I was exhibited upside down for 75 years. This error was told by the curator of the Museum of Modern Art in Düsseldorf, Susanne Meyer-Buser, writes Snob.

The canvas is a complex interlacing lattice of red, yellow and blue adhesive tapes. The painting was first presented to the public in 1945 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in 1980 it came to Germany.

The mistake was discovered when Meyer-Buser paid attention to the order of the glued strips. If you look at the picture in the form in which it was exhibited, it becomes obvious that the artist glued the tape from the bottom up. However, this is much more difficult than doing it from top to bottom.

“As soon as I pointed this out to other curators, we realized that it was quite obvious. I am 100% sure that the picture is hung incorrectly,” commented Meyer-Buser. According to her, it is now impossible to say exactly who made the mistake.

In addition, there was no master's signature on the artist's canvas, because, most likely, he considered it unfinished.

Despite all the evidence, the painting will be left as it has been hanging for 75 years.

“Adhesive tapes have almost come off and are hanging by a thread. If you flip the picture now, then gravity will pull them in the opposite direction. Now it is part of the history of the artist's work,” the curator explained.
