Quarantine in Antarctica: how the last continent lives without coronavirus

Antarctica is the only continent where there is not a single person infected with coronavirus. Access to medicine and necessary equipment is limited there, and the spread of the virus could lead to serious consequences.

Now quarantine has been introduced at all scientific stations.

“Foreign polar stations, as well as ours, Chilean ones, adhere to the concept of “isolation within isolation.” We are all following the instructions received from our countries,” says Alejandro Valenzuela Peña, commander of the Chilean navy.

The tourist season in Antarctica ended on March 3. At many stations, scientific work was suspended ahead of schedule.

In Antarctica, medical care is difficult to obtain. Therefore, the spread of coronavirus can lead to serious consequences.

“However, it is not difficult for us to comply with quarantine. Local bases rarely contact each other and are located at large distances from each other, the journey takes a lot of time. It is very unlikely that if someone got sick at one station, they would have managed to spread the virus without knowing about it,” said Marcelo Leppe Cartes, director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute.
