A report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics found that Hawaii has the highest life expectancy for residents at 80,9 years, while Mississippi has the lowest at 74,4 years. The report analyzes life expectancy in all 50 states and the District of Columbia using data on age-specific death rates in 2019. The average life expectancy in the country was 78,8 years. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that, in most cases, women live longer than men.

Elizabeth Arias, lead author of the new report, said that although poverty was not accounted for, states with low life expectancy also had high levels of poverty.

“If you look at the life expectancy map and the socioeconomic status map, including poverty, education level, we see that they are very similar,” Arias said.
