How Ukrainian startup conquered Silicon Valley with the opportunity to save time

If you want to grab a bite to eat at your favorite restaurant in America, but don't have time to wait for the food to cook, all you have to do is make a few clicks on your phone in advance and everything will be ready when you arrive. This became possible thanks to the Ukrainian startup Allset, which is gaining popularity in the United States.

The user opens the application, selects a restaurant, dishes from the menu and the right time, tells Voice of America. For 10 minutes comes SMS that the order is ready. You need to come to the institution where you are already waiting.

The path of the Ukrainian startup to the US market began 10 years ago. A group of international students of Kiev National University has united around the creation of websites and mobile applications.

“Everything was at a child’s level,” says company general director Stas Matvienko. “We were just interested in doing this.” But it still gave a good boost.”

Next was the 5 of various online services, while at 2015 young Ukrainians did not find their niche. Namely: to help customers who do not have time to wait for the preparation of the order, eat comfortably and quickly.

“I don’t want to eat from a box, take this box with me from a restaurant and eat somewhere on the street,” says Stas. “I want to come to a restaurant and be told: “Great, we’re already waiting for you.” Your order is already being prepared.” Within 2-3 minutes they will bring it to me, and I will eat in peace. And since I’ve already paid, I’ll thank you and move on with my business.”

For the first two years after the creation of the application, the team improved the system, since clients could be late or, conversely, arrive early. It was also necessary to take into account the cooking time, because frying a steak or cutting a salad are different tasks that require different amounts of time.

Hard work was not in vain. The project interested two Ukrainian investors. And when 1 managed to build a million dollars, the startup moved to the USA. Here the idea attracted serious investors who have invested more than 8 millions in the project.

“At first we wanted to create a global startup. Not just something local, but something that can work in a large market and change the lives of many people,” says company employee Dmitry Nikulin. “They moved to America because here is the best market for it.”

Now Allset has two offices: 9 people work in San Francisco, and 57 jobs have been created in Ukraine. And the company plans to expand.

“We can hire a much more talented person and for a lower salary in Kyiv than here,” says Stas.

Now a startup is working with 2000 restaurants in the United States. Their number is constantly growing. Services of the application founded by Ukrainians are gaining popularity: today it is used by 300 000 people. Americans like being able to eat quickly and comfortably in their favorite restaurant.

“It saves you time. “I’m always late for something, so it’s very good when everything is ready,” says Mallory, a visitor to a restaurant in San Francisco. “I think you definitely shouldn’t wait longer than 15 minutes for a slice of pizza.”

Allset has ambitious plans for the future.

Soon the company will launch an updated application that will analyze the tastes of users and give advice.

“We are starting to grow as a large company,” says Anna Polishchuk, co-founder of the startup. — We are growing from a small startup that consisted of 4 co-founders who sat in the same house together and invited Americans to work there. Our goal now is to become a big company, on par with the likes of Uber, Postmates and so on.”

In Ukraine, the service is not yet available due to a complex payment system.
