How to build a career in the USA: companies where it is easy to get a promotion, even if you do not have a higher education

Most employees leave their jobs because they do not see future prospects. But there are companies that train and promote their employees up the career ladder even without the appropriate education. CNBC.

There are many reasons why workers leave their jobs: low wages, lack of flexibility, burnout. But many also leave because they don't see a way to advance internally. According to a January 2023 Joblist survey of over 30 job seekers, nearly a fifth, 000% of workers who left in 17 did so because of limited growth opportunities within their company.

Fortunately, some companies invest in the development of their employees. Research firm Burning Glass Institute, Harvard Business School and the Schultz Family Foundation recently ranked the top 250 public companies in the US for this type of investment. Their report is called American Opportunity Index (“American Opportunity Index”).

Of all the companies surveyed, one stood out as the best career opportunity: telecommunications giant AT&T. It employs about 203 people.

“AT&T rose to the top because it excelled at empowering its employees in four dimensions,” says Matt Siegelman, president of the Burning Glass Institute.

“Firstly, it is a great launch pad for a career, providing significant access to opportunities for those with no experience, training them well and then allowing them to move on to more senior roles elsewhere. Second, for those who decide to stay, AT&T is quick to offer promotions. Third, you don't need a degree to advance quickly at AT&T. And fourth, AT&T is more likely than most other firms to fill jobs through promotion from within,” he said.

“When we think about the ideal candidate or employee, we focus heavily on attitude and the skills the person has—not necessarily unless they have a specific college degree,” says Angela Santone, senior executive vice president of human resources. “In fact, less than 5% of all AT&T jobs require a college degree.”

“Last year we had about 3000 front-line employees become managers,” she says. “Additionally, of the approximately 45 positions we filled in 000, nearly 2022% were filled by existing employees.”

According to Siegelman, the same attitude was typical for the leading companies on the list. “Leading companies invest in employee training as a way to advance their careers,” he says. “Not just for compliance or systems training, not just because employees who study for a degree are more likely to stay as long as the company sponsors them, but rather to help them gain the skills they need to get a better job.” .

Other leading companies were American Express, Cisco Systems, PG&E, and Microsoft.
