How resourceful New Yorkers survive during quarantine: from online work to services in exchange for food

The coronavirus epidemic has led to record unemployment in the United States. New York suffered more than other regions. However, the New Yorkers themselves do not seem to despair. Many of them have found ways not only to survive, but also to develop. This was told by the publication The print.

The record number of Americans - 22 thousand - lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Residents of New York, the most affected by the region’s epidemic in the country, are coming up with new ways to survive. All types of remote consultations and even barter, that is, services in exchange for food, are used.

The number of requests for unemployment benefits in the state led to the collapse of this public service system. So for many, getting help is still only a distant prospect.

However, the New Yorkers themselves do not seem to despair at all. They are finding new ways to survive during quarantine, when it would seem that there are much fewer opportunities than usual. They conduct virtual classes, give virtual concerts and are even willing to exchange their skills and talents for food.

Giada Paoloni is from Umbria, a region in Italy. She moved to New York ten years ago. Here she works as a freelance photographer. Before quarantine was declared, she worked with various prestigious New York restaurants, including the famous Il Buco, choosing content for marketing and social networks. However, due to quarantine, the girl lost her job. After a brief confusion, she found a way out of the situation - she offered brands working in the field of nutrition photo services in exchange for food. Jada got in touch with 15 restaurant sales companies, and they got a direct sales business model for private individuals.

Such an initiative was met with enthusiasm. Fruit and vegetable producers, kitchen equipment distributors, fish dealers and chefs sent their products to Jade. At home, she took a photo in the style of glossy publications and shot small videos. As a result, she created content for the sites of her new customers and social networks, where they were presented, including recipes. “Many New Yorkers do not know how to cook, they do not have this in DNA, unlike us Italians, hence the great demand for recipes,” explains Jada. “Before my emergency, some of my friends didn’t even have forks, a table and chairs!”

As a result of such cooperation, the girl received, for example, broth from fresh ingredients, fruits and vegetables, and a frying pan for $200. She says that instead of giving up, she figured out how to develop. “At least I'm trying to cut down on food costs. You need to figure out what your talent is and use it,” she says.

Jada's boyfriend is famous jazz bassist Chris Morrissey. In the evenings, he gives concerts in the stream from home. He earns on donations that listeners send him.
