A caravan of 1800 migrants arrived at the US border, but they will only be allowed through 20 per day.
Hundreds of migrants from the new caravan who have just reached the US border may have to wait in Mexico for a few months, as US border agents in a tiny Texas town where these immigrants want to cross the border can now process less than xnumx migrants per day.
This is evidenced by the data of the Border Control Service, writes NBC News.
February 5 over 1800 migrants arrived in Piedras Negras, Mexico, located across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
Border agents at Eagle Pass can process on the day of applications less than 20 asylum seekers in the US, and there are currently no plans to increase the number of officers at this checkpoint who can conduct an interview to justify the immigrant’s fear of returning to their home country, which is the first step in the US asylum process.
The Trump administration sends troops to Eagle Pass 250 in addition to more border patrol agents working there to ensure border security. The Texas Department of Public Security sent dozens of military personnel from the region who must provide security after the caravan arrives.
The ability of the Border Control Service to process asylum seekers applications depends on the speed with which immigration and customs authorities can transport immigrants from the border to places of detention.
The process of handling only a small number of immigrants per day is known as “metering” and has been used for short periods of particularly high waves of immigrant arrivals during the administration of Barack Obama. However, the Trump administration continued to use this method for several months in San Ysidro, California, which led to the need to create migrant camps in Tijuana.
In Tijuana, immigrants created an unofficial list in which each of them received a number in the queue. On this list, about 40 immigrants enter the checkpoint daily to apply for asylum.
Advocates for immigrant rights are worried about the poor conditions that immigrants can face if they are made to wait long in Piedras Negras, a small town with limited opportunities to ensure the living conditions of a large number of immigrants. They called on the Trump administration to send more staff to Eagle Pass to be able to process more immigrant applications per day.
The Department of Homeland Security recently announced that asylum seekers in San Isidro will be sent back to Mexico to await decisions on their cases.
