The new year brought dangerously cold temperatures over most of the US, record low temperatures were recorded from New York to Iowa.

Officials said the cold caused the death of at least 8 people, writes NBC.

School districts in Iowa, Massachusetts, Indianapolis, and northeastern Ohio abolished classes on Tuesday or shifted their beginnings due to the expected drop in temperature at 11-17 degrees below normal in the eastern half of the United States.

In Detroit, where the air temperature dropped to -19 degrees Celsius over the weekend, the body of an unknown person was discovered near the Shadi Grove church on January 1, which, according to police, froze to death.

In Milwaukee, where the temperature dropped to -20 degrees Celsius, the bodies of two men, 34 and 50, were found. According to doctors, they died from hypothermia.

In Bismarck, North Dakota, where the temperature dropped to -33 Celsius, police found a human body near the river, which, according to preliminary data, died from hypothermia.

Back in four cities: Charleston (WV), St. Louis (Missouri) Fond du Lac (Wisconsin) and Nashville (Tennessee) four more people were found dead, and the cause of their death, most likely, was hypothermia due to severe frosts.

Meanwhile, record or near-record low temperatures were recorded in Chicago, Buffalo, Des Moines and Omaha. During the New Year's celebrations in New York, the temperature was -13 degrees Celsius - it was the second coldest New Year's Eve in New York after December 31, 1917.

In Chicago, where 1 was in January, the air temperature dropped to -23 degrees Celsius, the rink was even closed, because its owners thought it was too cold outside so that the rink staff could do their work.

The snowiness of the roads in Michigan led to the formation of traffic jams on Interstate 94that combined with cold weather can be dangerous for the lives of drivers and passengers, so rescuers were sent to resolve the situation on the highway.
