Study: over 10 million US citizens live with illegal immigrants
More than 10 million US citizens live with illegal immigrants, according to a new Census Bureau analysis by Immigration Advocacy Group FWD.us. Writes about it The Hill.
Nearly half of these U.S. citizens, 4,9 million, are children with at least one undocumented parent.
The report shows how much illegal immigrants are integrated into their communities: 22 million people live in mixed-status families.
This number includes households with US citizens, legal permanent residents or temporary visa holders, and at least one person who is illegally in the US.
In addition, 1,7 million Americans are reported to be married to an illegal immigrant.
The analysis comes as immigrant advocates are pushing Democrats in Congress to fight to include immigration provisions in the upcoming $ 3,5 trillion budget bill.
Lawyers expect up to 8 million people to be covered by the bill, gaining access to lawful permanent residence, which is a path to US citizenship in itself.

Currently, illegal immigrants and beneficiaries of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program are largely not allowed to apply for any kind of legal status.
Advocates want the Democrats to include illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors, TPS beneficiaries, basic and agricultural workers in the bill.
Some human rights defenders are pushing for the inclusion of illegal family members, potentially increasing the number of people eligible for the status to 11 million.
The promotion of the universal legalization bill is underpinned by the growing political and economic influence of illegal and mixed-status communities.
According to a report by FWD.us, illegal spouses and parents of US citizens can earn 58% more from lawful permanent residence.

“This economic impact will have an important effect on the overall economy, adding $59 billion annually to the economy and an additional $16 billion in combined federal, payroll, state and local taxes,” wrote Philip Connor, a senior staff member at FWD.us.
Of the 2,4 million U.S. citizens who live with undocumented immigrants in California, 1,2 million are children, meaning 1,2 million eligible voters live in mixed-status households.
In Texas, 1,5 million eligible voters live in mixed-status households, more than 140 in Arizona and 000 in Georgia.
“Fixing our failed immigration system is a personal endeavor for millions of Americans living in mixed-status households. As citizens and voters, they hope that Congress will provide their families with a long-overdue chance for justice, certainty and a bright future,” Connor wrote.
