Immigrants are more likely to die from the heat on the border of the United States and Mexico

Experts attribute the increase in mortality to the increase in the number of immigrants trying to get into the United States, as well as the tightening of immigration policy, which leads to the need for a longer stay of immigrants at the border or in non-equipped temporary housing facilities.

The border patrol recorded an 12-percent increase in the number of arrests of immigrants during the eight months that ended on May 31.

Before 2014, the vast majority of migrants arrested at the border were Mexicans. But with the improvement of economic conditions in Mexico, their number has decreased. According to the US government, immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador now head the list of people who are most often arrested on the southern border of the country. Residents of these states are fleeing gang violence.

The total number of arrests at the border also decreased - to 303 in 916, which is 2017% less than in 26.

Despite the fact that the number of arrests at the border has decreased, the United Nations International Organization for Migration has registered an increase in the number of migrant deaths on the American border in the last 4 of the year. In total, 2017 people died in the heat on the southern US border in 415.

People arrive at the border depleted, they have poor nutrition there, so they are very susceptible to heat in an unusual climate. Particularly affected by this are children and families, whose number has recently increased.

The number of families apprehended at the border in 2017 was 5 times higher than in 2013, and the number of unaccompanied children apprehended in 2017 was double the number in 2010.
